The Speculative Image

Context: Bachelor of Design 
Unit: Design Studio 1 (DGN1000)
Assessment Value: 10%

Assessment Task Description:
The purpose of this task is to speculate on the future direction of your concept, and illustrate possible making methods and techniques. To achieve this, you will combine, manipulate, and edit a series of images using Photoshop. You can utilise the images you’ve taken in the supplementary photography sessions, source images, or use generative AI processes, providing they are appropriately acknowledged. As you include images in your design record the name of the work, artist (if possible), generative AI tool used, and the location of its source (webpage, book, magazine etc). Generative AI technologies are permitted, however, you must evidence an iterative development process through remixing and manipulating images in Photoshop and/or prompt crafting. AI use must be disclosed in thesupporting process documentation and reflection (template provided).

  • Application of the design elements and principles to the crafting of a digital image


  • Critical engagement (analysis and evaluation) with the thematic, selection of future challenge, conceptual and creative response, and design process.

  • Utilise the course material (technical demonstrations and videos) and third-party resources to work through an iterative design process using familiar and/or unfamiliar software.


  • Demonstrate the role and importance of themselves (as a human designer) within the process and written reflection.

  • Integrate conceptual and technical knowledge into a digital image that communicates the idea


  • Attention to each aspect of the submission requirements (including but not limited to the format, image quality and inclusion of the citations and acknowledgements).
